"Awnings are the oldest type of awning we know," says director Dennis Schoormans of Schlappi Awnings. The company has been an authority when it comes to awnings since 1986. For the consumer market, but also increasingly when it comes to (monumental) projects.
"More and more often we are involved in beautiful projects. For example, in the renovation of projects where awnings were already present, or monuments being restored to their former glory," Schoormans said. That Schlappi is credited for this is because this name stands for the highest quality. "If it has to be really beautiful and neat, then Schlappi is the place to be." Besides being beautiful, awnings are the most effective sun protection, according to Schoormans. "Because they also block the sun from the side, because the product is closed on the side. Because of the basket shape, the awning also does not flap in the wind."
In recent years, Schlappi has collaborated on several beautiful projects, such as the Berlage House in The Hague. "In cooperation with the executing party Decolux Projectzonwering from Rotterdam, we were allowed to supply as many as 300 electrically operated aluminum awnings for this. You don't know what you see when they all open up!"
The awnings were given an ochre-cream cloth, in a Hague Block stripe. With this project, however, Schlappi also had to take into account the requirements of the intensively involved building standards committee. "We therefore pay attention to the smallest details. This is what we are known for and why we are gaining name and fame."
One of the requirements of this project was that the engines not be placed visibly.
The fact that the awning can be electrically operated already shows that the development of this form of awning does not stand still. Numerous improvements and innovations have been made, in terms of materials, construction, operation and extras.
"It is now also possible to use solar motors. Especially with monumental buildings this is very advantageous, because one does not have to drill. The motor is incorporated into the awning and on top is a solar panel, which charges the battery." Schlappi himself has also developed a lighting concept for awnings. This dimmable LED lighting with remote control is built into the profiles, on the inside.
Schoormans speaks proudly of several other projects Schlappi has been involved in. "We recently supplied 65 awnings with a bright orange block stripe for hotel The Manor in Amsterdam. These are very iconic. This really makes a building stand out. It is a wonderful project, where the choice was made for charisma."
In order for the awning to completely match the appearance of a building, there are an awful lot of choices in terms of color combinations. Schlappi helps his customers with this choice by creating visuals. "That way the customer can get a good idea of the look of the awning."
In renovation projects, a new awning is not even always necessary. "It does depend on the condition of the awning, but we also repair awnings, paint the frame, and provide new cladding."
