Escape route signs with a 'floating' pictogram

Velp-based Famostar has specialized in the development and production of emergency lighting for 65 years. Product Manager Marc Ettema: "We are a completely Dutch company and still the only ones who develop and produce emergency lighting here." That Famostar develops fine quality products is evidenced by the Red Dot Award it won in 2021 with its latest luminaire, the D-Sign. A complete fixture family of this model is now available.

D-Sign is emergency lighting with a functional design.

The D-Sign is emergency lighting with a functional design. The design process resulted in a distinctive and timeless luminaire. D-Sign has a modern, slender design with an optically "floating" pictogram. Special functional features include the Famostar Flash Alert™ function, the fact that no tools are required for maintenance and battery replacement - other than a small flathead screwdriver - and the optional, fully integrated and full-fledged escape route lighting.

Ettema: "In many cases two luminaires are needed, now only one product needs to be purchased for the escape route signs and escape route lighting. This is cheaper and it saves time, and therefore money, for the installer."

Ettema continues: "We managed to release a full line of D-Sign within just a few months. A top achievement of the development team of which we are all very proud. Last summer we first launched the surface-mounted wall and ceiling fixtures. Now a recessed and pendant version have been added. Recessed models make up a significant proportion of all applications. In a suspended ceiling, you can conceal as much as possible, leaving only the necessary pictogram visible, which appears to be floating. And the pendant version is a necessity for a design luminaire that will find its way into many public and taller buildings."

Not distracting in dark rooms

D-Sign is ideally suited for public places, says Ettema. "It is a fixture that may be seen. For example, the product has already been applied in Theater Carré, typically a place where we like to see it hanging."

Especially for darker rooms, such as a theater or a cinema, D-Sign is available in a special dimmed version. "Ordinary emergency lighting can be quite disruptive here, and we therefore ensure that the light is less present there. As proud as we may be of our luminaire, in such spaces it can (and should) shine a little less."

Electrical consultants are often the ones who choose Famostar emergency lighting, for use in a multitude of buildings, offices, theaters, museums and hotels. They do so not only because of the fixtures' looks.

Ettema: "We still give the longest warranties in the market. 10 years on fixtures, including the LED lighting. According to the standard, the battery has a lifespan of - at least - four years, but we give an eight-year warranty after the installation date. This is sustainable and less expensive, and this way we also ensure less waste. We have the ambition to become one of the most sustainable partners."
