Modular Beo Carpet.

Maximum impact, zero wa(e)ste

Completely custom made and with social impact. In doing so, Studio Wae gives waste a new meaning.

Tynke van den Heuvel, founder of Studio Wae, worked for more than 14 years in a recycling company for precious metals and electronic goods. "I was shocked by the amounts of raw materials that are thrown away as waste but still have a function," she says. "So I introduced 2017 tiles made of 76% circular concrete rubble, which we may use to pave almost all of ProRail's new platforms next year. I also launched climate-adaptive outdoor tiles."

A short time later, Tynke was approached by a circular demolisher, who was removing large quantities of carpet tiles from old office buildings. Did she also have a use for these? "The carpet tiles often turned out to still be of excellent quality. We therefore process them into modular rugs with unique geometric shapes inspired by M.C. Escher. A unique coupling system allows for endless design variations."

In 2019, Studio Wae also partnered with the three largest Dutch carpet tile manufacturers (Interface, Tarkett/Desso and Forbo). "We are also turning their production waste into modular and circular rugs, without tapping into new raw materials."

The stock now has more than 80 colors. Architects and end users can determine their own colors, shape and size, making each rug unique. The carpets are assembled by hand in the Utrecht workshop. This is also done in a socially responsible way: much of the handiwork is done for a full salary by Syrian status holders.

In addition to modular rugs, Studio Wae produces modular carpet tiles in unusual shapes, which can be laid broadloom, as well as circular and modular wall panels. The wall panels use acoustic carpet tiles with a thick felt layer, creating special 3D effects and line games. In addition, the wall panels can be used excellently as bulletin boards. As a result, sustainability, aesthetics, (sound) insulation and functionality go hand-in-hand.
