Monument converted from office to apartment building

The Estel building in Nijmegen is one of the youngest municipal monuments in the Netherlands. After years of being used as an office, it was decided to convert the building into an apartment building. Annette Bensdorp, interior designer at Delight of Living realized a sleek, spacious loft including a garden totaling 500 m² in the former boardroom.

Spatial design

Except for three walls and a glass front, nothing was predetermined for the layout the loft. Bensdorp designed a bright, modern living room with kitchen area and a large work area in the 330-square-meter apartment. There are also three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a walk-in closet, all of which have tall windows of no less than 3.5 m.

Tight door surfaces

The black doors in the walls are tall and flat, with concealed hinges and magnetic locks. These recede into the frame, revealing a clean wall. The whole has a modern and stylish look. Olivari's sleek 'Link' door handles, designed by Italian architect Piero Lissoni, were chosen for the door hardware. "We found the beautiful, sleek Olivari door handles in anthracite matte perfectly suited the design of the loft. Sleek, subtle and warm," said Bensdorp.

Estel Building

The Estel building has a skeleton of steel and glass. In 1977 it was completed as an office building with a progressive design for the time, equipped with many terraces, balconies and (rooftop) gardens. In 2015 it was decided to convert the building into an apartment building. A total of 62 apartments were realized, all of which differ from each other in area and layout.
