Who doesn't want to build faster, safer, more efficient and cheaper? It is a question that does not fall on deaf ears. Not even among contractors who are diligently looking for solutions, partly due to the shortage on the labor market ("Where are we going to get new people?"). For example, in stair construction. At Hoograven Traptechniek they know for sure that the traditional profession of stair fitter (the stelleur) will definitely change. Nick Dix, director/owner of the ambitious family business, is speaking.
"If you innovate, then obviously the whole chain - and especially the end users - should benefit," says Nick. "And by that I also mean a piece of process innovation. If you can develop something - in consultation with your suppliers, of course - that gives the chain as a whole an advantage, then you are obviously on the right track. And I dare say here that we are. Thanks to our supplier Anker Stuy Verven, who managed to develop such a high quality water-based coating for our stairs, which is highly resistant to moisture and water, that we already assemble the stairs in our factory, after which they can wait a few days outside for further assembly after delivery to the building site. The elements (rain, storm, hail, etc.) that are always there in the Netherlands will not damage the stairs."
So the Ankocryl coating (from Anker Stuy Paints) is the answer. Or if you will, the recipe. "With the durable water-based primer, the stair components are well protected. Where it is applicable, we end up making the work lighter for the men on site ánd we deliver consistent quality to the construction site."
Nick explains that it saves time for the contractor. "The latter is less dependent on the stair fitter. Everything can now be coordinated better. So actually you win back some control."
"So what paint from Anker Stuy Verven can do!" so says Nick with a smile. "We can now also organize the work in the production hall more efficiently. Thanks to the good quality primer and optimal coverage of about 80mu, stair parts are well protected. Moreover, the great thing is that the contractor is less dependent on the stair adjuster. Emergency stairs have become unnecessary."
Besides the fact that water-based paint is better for health than solvent-based paint, the prefab staircase is also the solution for the mechanic to retire in a healthy, safe way. Past research conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration shows that the profession of staircase fitter is considered one of the toughest occupations next to that of concrete fitter. Not only is it a tough profession: there is also a huge shortage of mechanics and the aging of the industry has been taking place for years.
Nick concludes, "Yes, I definitely feel like an ambassador of The New (Staircase) Building. But I can only be that because our supplier - Anker Stuy Paints - has so much innovative power."
