Biobased living calls for thoughtful finishing touches

Translating Your Living Concept into Bathroom Choices

With its Flow Homes, BAM is committed to biobased housing, factory-based production, and a high quality of living. Within this concept, the finishing touches of the homes also play an important role. Through Homestudios, BAM and AM guide residents in designing their homes, with partners such as Duravit forming part of the overall living concept.

“For us, it starts with the neighborhood and the living environment,” says Sander ter Beek, director at AM. “We’re exploring how we can create sustainable neighborhoods using more biobased materials and fewer fossil-based raw materials. Wood plays an important role in this. It adds warmth and character while also offering a great deal of flexibility in the design.”

According to Ter Beek, the concept isn’t just about speed and industrialization, but also about how residents experience their homes. “Ultimately, it’s about the person who wants to turn a house into their dream home. There’s much more to it than just a floor plan.”

From a house to a home

This focus on the homeowner takes shape at Homestudios. There, consultants guide buyers through the process of selecting their new home. This begins with the home’s floor plan and extends all the way to the finishes for the bathroom, floors, and wall tiles.

According to Ard Siekerman, director of Homestudios, guidance is very important. “If you leave everything entirely up to the residents, the decision-making process often becomes confusing. It is precisely by guiding people through the process step by step that a sense of calm and cohesion is created.”

“We try to give residents an understanding of exactly what they’re buying first,” he continues. “With the Flow homes, for example, we pay a lot of attention to the living environment and the characteristics of the wooden home. Then we look at which options align with how people want to live in the future.” Inside the Flow homes, wood plays an important role—for example, in the staircase. “Residents can finish it themselves, but many people choose to leave the wood exposed. That immediately adds character to the home.”

High-quality base finish

The bathroom plays an important role in the home selection process. According to Ter Beek, this space has a major impact on the overall living experience. “The kitchen and bathroom continue to be key factors in how people experience a home. They are spaces where comfort and relaxation come together.”

To bring this vision to life, BAM is collaborating with Duravit. According to Siekerman, the brand aligns with the desired level of finish within the concept. “We look for partners who not only deliver quality but also contribute ideas about new developments and changing living preferences. Duravit has grown alongside us in that process from the very beginning.” Vince Hoogenraad, Head of Projects at Duravit Netherlands: “We are proud to have a program that allows us to translate bathroom choices into the biobased living concept.”

Homestudios quickly sees trends reflected in residents“ actual choices. ”Black accents in the bathroom, different tile patterns, or new material combinations quickly became popular. Because we’re in daily contact with residents, we see these shifts right away. Duravit responds quickly to these trends, and sometimes we even stay ahead of them.”

At the same time, affordability remains a key principle. That is why BAM, Homestudios, and Duravit are constantly seeking a balance between standardization and freedom of choice. “Not everything has to be completely customized,” Siekerman concludes. “It is precisely by offering targeted choices within a strong basic concept that you can effectively combine speed, quality, and the living experience.”
