The tenth edition of ARCHITECT@WORK in Rotterdam proved to be a great success. This year's event in Ahoy was entirely dedicated to the theme of "Super Skin," with a focus on innovations in facade materials and technologies. On September 11 and 12, an estimated 3,600 to 4,000 visitors attended the event, mainly architects, interior architects and project developers. With more than 180 exhibitors, there was plenty of inspiration for all professionals in attendance.
The "Super Skin" theme highlighted the latest developments in facade technologies, with a strong focus on sustainability and aesthetics. Exhibitors presented innovations that go beyond mere protection, such as self-cleaning facades and energy-generating materials. These innovative solutions show how the future of facades increasingly combines aesthetics, functionality and ecology. This theme was powerfully underlined by an exciting lecture program.
For example, Antwerp-based Bovenbouw Architectuur gave a lecture highlighting the relationship between architectural history and contemporary façade designs. Caro van de Venne of Nudus inspired with her vision of characterful architecture, in which circular materials play a central role. Ron Bakker of PLP Architecture and Don Murphy of VMX Architects also shared their views on the role of facades in the sustainability of future building projects.
The exhibition floor of ARCHITECT@WORK once again proved to be a dynamic meeting place for innovation and inspiration. Visitors were able to interact directly with suppliers and manufacturers to gain hands-on experience with new materials and technologies. The MaterialDistrict exhibition stood out with sustainable facade materials that will shape the future of architecture.
Another notable feature of the fair was Simone Heemskerk's live art installation. Her work was created on site and added a creative dimension to the event. In addition, the photo exhibition by the Dutch Architecture Photographers (DAPh) offered a visual celebration of innovative architecture, while World-Architects.com showcased a selection of groundbreaking projects.
In addition to the innovative stands, the lecture program was an important element of ARCHITECT@WORK. Experts from various disciplines shared their insights on the latest developments in architecture and technology. One of the best-attended lectures was that of Jille Koop, sustainability advisor at the Government Property Agency. He spoke about circular building and the reuse of materials, a topic that is becoming increasingly relevant within the architecture sector.
The relaxed atmosphere and the carefully selected profile of participants - the latter has been the event's success factor for many years - ensured that networking during the event came naturally. Architects, designers, engineers and manufacturers exchanged ideas and undoubtedly forged new partnerships. This once again made ARCHITECT@WORK an excellent place to make valuable contacts and work together on tomorrow's architectural challenges.
What made this edition of ARCHITECT@WORK in Rotterdam special was the unique Dutch atmosphere compared to other editions, such as the one in Kortrijk. Ahoy Rotterdam, centrally located and easily accessible, provided the perfect venue for the event. The Dutch emphasis on sustainability and innovation was clearly felt, both on the exhibition floor and in the lectures. This gave the fair a typically Dutch character that was appreciated by many visitors.
ARCHITECT@WORK Rotterdam 2024 therefore once again proved to be a must-visit for professionals in the architecture and design world. With a combination of innovative products, instructive lectures and excellent networking opportunities, this edition was a great success. The organization is already looking forward to the next edition, which will again focus on the latest innovations and trends. Ahoy Rotterdam therefore remains the meeting place for everyone who wants to keep abreast of the rapidly evolving world of architecture and design.
