Minimum view widths, maximum transparency

New glass folding wall enables even higher and wider sash sizes

Maximum transparency, generous openings and smooth transitions between inside and outside. That is Solarlux's ambition. The market leader in flexible façade solutions innovates and tests its products continuously, with an eye for technical details, design and optimal living comfort. Following the popular glass folding wall systems Ecoline (HR++ glass), Highline (triple glazing), Combiline (wood/aluminum) and Woodline (wood), Solarlux now introduces Megaline; a glass folding wall system which makes even wider wing sizes (up to 1.500 mm) possible.

"With Highline, until recently architects and end users were bound to maximum sash widths of 1,100 mm, at a height of 2,300 mm," says Jan Jaap Hofstra, Consultant Architects at Solarlux. "However, from the market we heard that larger glass surfaces were desired, with the same slim profiling, to give facades even more transparency. We investigated and extensively tested the possibilities for this in a pilot project, after which a new development process was started. This resulted in a new glass folding wall. With Megaline, we can realize sash widths of up to 1,500 mm, at a height of up to 2,300 mm. But wings of 900 mm wide and 4,500 mm high are also possible, depending on the chosen insulation values, glass packages, et cetera. Working closely with the architect, we are happy to determine the appropriate configurations for each project. The resulting digital drawings can easily be added to the design."

Pilot project: Stock Amsterdam

Pilot project for Megaline was business building Stock in Amsterdam. "The wish for this industrially designed building in the Verrijn Stuart business park was to be able to easily open the entire facade," says Hofstra.

"For example, to enable optimal storage and logistics. High sparing dimensions were leading in this respect. Instead of overhead doors, the architect very deliberately chose Megaline folding walls in a graphite gray (RAL 7024) color, taking functionality and appearance to the highest level."

Strong and slim

Megaline has been available to everyone since the beginning of 2022. Instead of a face width of 99 mm in the sash transition, the new glass folding wall features a face width of 132.5 mm. "This makes the folding wall system statically even stronger than its predecessors, while still being the slimmest in the market," said Hofstra. "In the event of extreme weather conditions, for example at the coast, the profile can be 'boosted' even further by adding additional profile as required. Folding walls with sash heights of 2,550 mm or higher are also equipped as standard with a sill to prevent skewing of the sashes. In this way we guarantee maximum stability under all conditions."

In addition to stability, extensive attention has been paid to the details. For example, the underflow system features high-quality steel runners that, combined with the extensive adjustment options, ensure a very light run. "It's sophisticated design with three instead of two bionic-TURTLE® thermal breaks also makes the Megaline folding walls suitable for passive construction projects," says Hofstra. "Uw values of up to 0.9 are no problem at all."

Valuable addition

Depending on the desired insulation values, Megaline can be equipped with HR++ or triple glazing (22 to 60 mm dry-glazed). A combination with fanlights is also possible. The aluminum profiles of the folding wall system can be anodized or powder coated (in accordance with Qualicoat class 2) in any RAL color, making them a valuable addition to any home or commercial space.
