'Surprised at possibilities and results'

It is resistant to extreme weather conditions, rustproof and lightweight: we're talking about the advantages of aluminum roof and wall cladding, says Tom Vanhandenhove of PREFA GmbH right at the start of this conversation.

The origins of PREFA GmbH go back to the year 1946 when Alois Gödl from Salzburg, Austria, invented a roofing system. Tom: "Especially for the mountain huts in Austria and because of the weight and durability, he chose pressed aluminum sheets. An invention, since further developed, about which we are still very enthusiastic." 

The choice in the material of roof tiles is large: you have them in different types like clay, concrete or slate. 

"Our aluminum roofs and facades are part of a beautiful and environmentally friendly overall system, also ideally suited for renovations. In addition to being color-, storm-, rust- and break-resistant, it is also lightweight. Enough arguments for us to offer a maximum forty-year warranty."

In a roof renovation, replacing an existing one with an aluminum canopy is not a problem. "If the covering, construction or insulation material need to be renewed or if they have damage that is dangerous, we help develop and realize the renovation plans. At every stage we support and advise." 

Replacing it with aluminum makes a huge difference in weight. "It can save up to thirty pounds per square meter. Interesting if, for example, a slate roof is due for renewal. The supporting structure is often not able to cope with the weight of roof tiles made of clay or concrete. Then the additional reinforcement required is an expensive investment that may not pay off."

Over the past 75 years, Prefa has continued to evolve. "Today we do not limit ourselves to roofs only. We also have plenty of experience in cladding facades. Aluminum is alive: it expands and contracts. "With a special process, it is provided that the color coating follows the action of the material so that it does not flake off. With a wide range of accessories, existing skylights connect effortlessly, solar panels are easily installed and the accessories ensure the right ratio of ventilation and heating of the building. With an anti-drip strip, it is ensured that the metal casing never sounds like a sound box: it absorbs noise and vibrations."

More and more, Tom finds that people are enthusiastic about aluminum roofing and cladding as an alternative to clay, slate and concrete. "When we come by and present our products people are surprised. It gives them more options when it comes to design and appearance. It is a flexible material that is also easy for the processor to handle. So consider this an added advantage," Tom concludes.
