Update NTF Matrix is forthcoming

If your objective - as a trade association - is to translate complex laws and regulations into practice in a manageable way, allowing for the correct application of standards and frameworks, then it is obviously an advantage if that trade association has been able to come up with its own handy overview for this.

The NTF (The Dutch Staircase Manufacturers) developed the so-called NTF Matrix several years ago. Branch manager Ron den Toom explains that an update is coming. "A revised matrix is expected to be available this summer in which all Building Code requirements are listed per building use function, on 1 A4 sheet. It is a particularly useful tool for architects, among others, who can see at a glance what the possibilities are in the design - and therefore construction - of a staircase. Not only architects now use this tool, but certainly also manufacturers make frequent use of it.

This is no unnecessary luxury, Den Toom continues. "We once developed the matrix because there was a need - certainly also among architects - for a kind of checklist. What is possible? What is not possible? What should I think about when designing a staircase? It is in fact our experience that the calculation of the various components - when designing a staircase - is often outsourced to a structural engineer. However, at the same time we see a demand in the market for ever shorter lead times. It is precisely for this reason that I advocate making the design and calculation work unambiguously available to a structural engineer. That saves time. Using the NTF Matrix, calculations can be done better and sometimes in-house."

"In short, the NTF Matrix is the basis for engineering. It is a welcome support for the architects of the Netherlands, who deal with steel stairs. One immediately knows what laws and standards one must comply with."

"After all, building stairs is a craft," he continues. "Whether it's an escape staircase or a designer staircase. There are a lot of possibilities. Just look at the materialization. From wood to stainless steel, or metal to natural stone. A staircase is essential. I would even say: if you are going to design an interior or exterior interior: start with the stairs. In addition, I say to the architect: also try to come to the table as soon as possible. This will prevent the staircase from being seen as a kind of 'closing item'. That is often at the expense of the design. But above all with the NTF Matrix in hand, there is at least a good guide to see what is then possible within the set design and construction challenge."

Den Toom explains that after next summer, special NTF-Matrix courses will also be back on the agenda. "We discovered during the corona period that it is difficult to achieve such knowledge transfer via ZOOM or TEAMS. This is really something you have to do live, also because of the interaction. In this way you can immediately make a training or course very practical.
