Van der Valk Schiphol shines with new lighting plan

Industrial look and sustainability central

New construction of Van der Valk Schiphol began in early 2020. 225 old rooms were demolished and replaced by 270 new hotel rooms. A unique meeting room was also created. The space of 1,000 m² and 6 meters high is halfway between a typical meeting room and an event hall. Klemko Technology provided the lighting plan for the new building, in collaboration with the hotel's technical department and the contractor.

Account Manager Leo van Aken emphasizes, "We always put the ideas and wishes of our customers first. For this hotel, an industrial look, simplicity and sustainability were crucial aspects. We went with that." Therefore, only light sources and luminaires that meet the minimum 50,000-hour lifespan, with a minimum light output of 70%, were used in this project. In addition, all light sources in the hotel are DALI-dimmable."

All components for this project were delivered plug-and-play, which Van Aken says allowed for super-fast installation and minimized errors. "The project is now complete, including the renovation of the old meeting room. We are extremely proud of the final result, which has achieved the industrial look, simplicity and sustainability that had been agreed with the client. The rooms are already in use and the hotel is very pleased with the new lighting installation."

A uniform appearance due to the same light sources

At the client's request, Klemko used the same light sources as much as possible to achieve uniformity in appearance. In the hotel's new construction area, the Lumiko Compact series was used. 

"This series has been on the market for more than a decade and is known for the separate system of driver and LED luminaire, which guarantees a lifetime of 50,000 hours. The models and sizes have remained the same over the years, to make expansion and replacement of existing installations as easy as possible." 

The lights in the hallways default to 40% to save energy. When the motion sensor detects guests, the lights go on to shine fully in the walking direction. Small spotlights of 2, 3 and 7 watts were used in the hotel rooms, corridors and restaurant, while double light sources of 17 watts were chosen for the conference room due to its height. The black color of the fixtures enhances the industrial look. 

In the restaurant, Klemko installed wavy LED strips in the coves. Van Aken: "The light bars create brilliant, dimmable ambient lighting that streaks across the ceilings like a gentle breeze. With their undulating movement, the LED strips add not only style but also elegance to the surroundings." 

Track spots are also used in the restaurant, equipped with a 3-phase Eurorail adapter. This allows for seamless integration into both the new and existing Eurorail. "With their tilt, swivel and slide functions, these spotlights are an ideal tool for creating flexible and dynamic lighting solutions. This makes lighting a breeze!"
