Masonry and cladding panels create dynamic facade

Masonry and cladding panels create dynamic facade

Apartments with a friendly and small-scale character

In the green Kuyper neighborhood in Delft, 32 apartments were realized in De Tuin van Teding. Modern living in harmony with the green surroundings was central to this project. For the finish of the facade, Steenhuis Bukman Architects chose brickwork, alternating with two different Swisspearl facade panels for the gallery and balconies.

"When Van Wijnen approached us for this project, it was immediately clear that the green structure, designed by landscape designer Mien Ruys, is essential to this neighborhood," begins Marc Bukman of Steenhuis Bukman Architects. "This is a typical post-war neighborhood and it is extraordinary that its structure is still unchanged. We wanted to design a building that does not contrast with this, but stands as a freestanding volume in a park. In the spirit of the original urban design. To fit in with the surroundings, we chose a four-story and partly five-story building."

Characteristics of early postwar construction

The Garden of Teding consists of 32 apartments, all equipped with a ventilation air/water combination heat pump system. 21 apartments of about 87 m², 10 head apartments of about 68 m² and one special: the XL apartment of about 102 m² with bay window and roof terrace on the top residential floor. "We wanted the building to be interesting on all sides and meet different housing needs," says Bukman. "So it was obvious to choose different housing types. We reflected characteristics of the early postwar buildings in the design. You can see this in the staggered windows and the glazed bricks, which are incorporated into the facade as a wink. The brickwork and varied balcony designs give the building a friendly and small-scale character."

The appearance of the building is largely determined by brickwork, but Steenhuis Bukman Architects sought more variety in the facade appearance. Whereas the gallery, balcony ceilings and stairwell are an understated feature in some designs, the architectural firm felt it was important to finish them with detail and care. "For previous projects, we had already worked with Swisspearl, so we knew that they provide suitable products," he said.

Fire safety also played an important role. Dennis Schoonemeijer, Architect Consultant at Swisspearl: "It is the combination of products and materials that determines the fire class. Our cladding panels were therefore end-use tested on a timber frame element and, in this combination, meet fire class B. This is fairly unique in the market."

Swisspearl cladding panels enhance architecture

In the search for facade panels with the right color, even over time, Steenhuis Bukman Architects chose Swisspearl Patina Original and Patina Inline. Patina Original is characterized by subtle sanding lines and patinas over time. With its milled linear grooves, Patina Inline creates a 3D effect, creating a dynamic and vibrant look depending on the light and viewing angle. These boards also change color as they age. Says Bukman, "We used the Original in two colors so we could enhance our architecture with three colors. We really use the facade panels to design with, not just to fill in a surface. They are important to the overall look of the building. That's why we were also very happy with the way the screws fit exactly into the lines of the panels."

During the construction process, Steenhuis Bukman Architects had regular contact with Swisspearl: "They provided us with all the information we needed, such as technical details and product information. This gave us a good idea of the result. We are very happy with our cooperation."
