Smart energy infrastructure and lighting design connected

From March 8 to 13, 2026, Frankfurt am Main will once again host Light + Building, the leading international trade fair for lighting and building automation. With over 2,000 exhibitors from more than 50 countries, including 34 from the Netherlands and 24 from Belgium, the event provides a broad overview of technological innovations and design trends. The main topic: how light and technology together shape the buildings of tomorrow.

Organizer Messe Frankfurt brings this topic together under the theme ‘Be Electrified. Electrifying Places. Illuminating Spaces.’ This connects two worlds: that of smart energy infrastructure and that of lighting design. Three central pillars, Sustainable Transformation, Smart Connectivity, and Living Light, form the common thread running through the program.

Sustainability and efficiency as a basis

The construction and installation sectors are under pressure to build in a more energy-efficient, circular, and future-proof manner. Light + Building offers an international platform where solutions become tangible, from energy management systems and solar energy systems to circular lighting concepts. In halls 12 and 11, ABB, Gira, Hager, Schneider Electric, Siemens, and others will present their latest applications for electrical installations, automation, and energy management.

Smart buildings and connected systems

Digitization is a second common theme. Under the theme of Smart Connectivity, manufacturers are demonstrating how buildings are evolving into intelligent networks with numerous interfaces. Consider IoT solutions, data-driven control, predictive maintenance, and secure digital infrastructures.

The power of light as a design language

The Living Light pillar is particularly interesting for architects and lighting designers. It focuses on adaptive and human-centric lighting, i.e. lighting that adapts to time, use, and mood. In halls 3 and 4, manufacturers such as Bega, Kreon, XAL, Zumtobel, Casambi, LedsC4, Signify, Osram, Trilux, Prolicht, and Linea Light Group will be showcasing their latest collections. Their designs demonstrate how technology and aesthetics reinforce each other, whether in work environments, public spaces, or hospitality projects.

Focus on design and knowledge

In addition to the exhibition floor, Light + Building offers an extensive knowledge program. The Design Plaza in hall 3.1 is the stage for lectures and talks on lighting design, trends, and sustainability. This is also where the Designplus Awards are presented for products that best combine design, innovation, and sustainability. New this year are the IALD International Lighting Design Awards, which put international lighting projects in the spotlight.

Architects and designers will also find Architects’ Day interesting, with lectures and discussions on design, energy, and comfort in the built environment. In addition, the Workshop Street offers practical demonstrations for the installation sector, while the ZVEI Technology Forum and the E-House showcase the latest applications of smart home technology.
