TBE-ZA Architects and Engineers wins Project of the Year Award with Royal Boon Edam

On the estate of castle de Vanenburg in Putten, the Trespa / ArchiComm Project of the Year Award was presented on December 12. TBE-ZA Architects and Engineers from Volendam, led by general manager Bert Verweij, won the award with the Koninklijke Boon Edam project. The venue offered attendees the opportunity to vote for one of the 13 nominated projects.

Project of the Year 2023: Royal Boon Edam

Commissioned by Royal Boon Edam, TBE-ZA architects and engineers had the opportunity to design the renovation and partial topping of the existing headquarters. The official opening of the renovated building took place Friday afternoon, December 8, in the presence of His Majesty the King. The family business, supplier of turnstile doors, security doors and locks, entrance gates and walk-through locks also celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

The building's design is characterized by tight rhythm and balance between horizontality and verticality. Dark horizontal bands form the basis of the design, resulting in a calm appearance. This choice not only emphasizes the precision of the detailing, but also creates a visually appealing whole. Says Bert Verweij of TBE-ZA architects and engineers, "The appearance of the building fits the premium brand Royal Boon Edam, it is an office building that honors the allure of the company."

Good cooperation

A program of catering and knowledge sharing was offered during the event, leading up to the announcement of the winner. Jim Wolters, account manager Façade at Trespa, noted: "We had not 12 but 13 nominees at this first edition because we started counting from November 2022 to now: 13 months, in other words. The competition was stiff because each project had its own unique value and characteristics. The results - especially in the top three - turned out to be a close call.

Marjet Rutten, guest speaker, addressed the challenges in the construction industry regarding the Paris climate goals. "To meet the Paris climate goals, a miracle actually has to happen. That requires a radically different way of designing, building, maintaining, collaborating and financing," said Marjet Rutten.

Assignment

"The construction sector has an important role to play in reducing this substantially," Marjet Rutten continued. "Because the construction sector has barely reduced CO2 emitted for the production of materials, the sector should not reach 60% but even 75% by the year 2030. At the current rate, however, construction is going to emit at most 10% less. So there is a challenge that the entire construction sector - including the architects of the Netherlands who are at the start of every task - must do their utmost to meet." A tough assignment for designing and collaborative Netherlands!

Successful first edition

Organizer Jim Wolters, Façade account manager at Trespa, who had taken care of the entire coordination of the event, looks satisfied. "Fair is fair when you are a company organizing an event for the first time and have ambitions to grow, you have to give everything from the beginning to put the event on the map.
