Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, designed by architecture firm MVRDV, has been in operation since the end of 2021 as the world's first publicly accessible art depot. The roof of the extraordinary building has been fitted with lighting by in-lite that enhances the wow factor.
In Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, visitors see more than 152,000 collected works of art stored together, arranged and structured in fourteen depot rooms. In addition to the objects, all the activities involved in managing and maintaining a collection are on display. Those who take the elevator to the sixth floor end up on the roof, where restaurant Renilde is located. Visitors have a great view of the city from the roof and find themselves in a forest at altitude. An event space can also be found here.
"There was no lighting on the roof yet," says in-lite LAB Coordinator Bronos Polders. "We approached Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen because we actually thought this was a missed opportunity. We saw a lot of potential to beautifully illuminate the tall trees to extend the experience in the evening hours. So we suggested we come by for a demonstration. With a number of fixtures, we showed what effect our lighting could achieve."
Polders continues: "At in-lite, we find that a tree is best lit with warm white light. This way the colors come out most natural and realistic. Our proposal was to apply SMART SCOPE TONE. SMART SCOPE TONE is an RGB-W Spot, and illuminating objects with warm white light is quite possible with this. This way a perfect and atmospheric base is always present."
Because Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen indicated that light color also needed to be changed for events, the SMART SCOPE TONE was a good choice. "This is because you change the light color of the fixture very easily by means of the in-lite app. This way the light color suits certain events or holidays. They were immediately very enthusiastic about this at the depot."
"For the large trees we used the SMART SCOPE TONE, but we also used the MINI SCOPE. These fixtures complement each other because the power of the light differs. The soft spots are found at the beginning of the edges, while the large spots were used for the trees. This also creates a difference in depth."
Through the use of the in-lite SMART HUB, Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen can set the lighting entirely as it wishes. "For example, the color can be set and lines of spotlights can be turned on separately. The SMART SCOPE TONE can also be operated individually. Then you can choose to turn one tree red, another warm white and yet another in a purple light."
The response to the new lighting, which was installed in late 2022, has been very positive, according to Bronos. "There is a super good response to it, for example from the restaurant. Before, visitors actually looked into a black hole at night, now there is much more depth in the outdoor space. The color spots have also been used several times for events."
