SUSTAINABILITY MAY WELL BE THE MOST IMPORTANT KITCHEN TREND OF 2027

A look at kitchen trends for 2027 reveals soft, organic shapes, bold architecture, and a renewed focus on natural materials. But beneath all these visible trends lies a more fundamental development: sustainability as a factor in material selection.

For architects and designers, this creates an interesting tension. A material must not only have a lower environmental impact, but also contribute to the design, be pleasant to use on a daily basis, and fit within the available budget.

That is precisely where a lot is changing. Sustainable kitchen countertop materials do not necessarily require compromises in terms of appearance or functionality. An increasing number of materials are available that combine aesthetics and practical features with more sustainable material choices. As a result, sustainability is no longer a limitation on design, but rather an additional design criterion.

From Appearance to Material

Many factors come into play when choosing a kitchen countertop. Color, texture, and appearance are important, but properties such as scratch and heat resistance, ease of maintenance, durability, and environmental impact also determine whether a material is suitable for a particular design.

It’s interesting to note that there is an ever-increasing variety of materials that combine these properties. Consider, for example, Greengridz as a lightweight base for kitchen countertops, or materials such as Obsidiana and Evora Restone, in which reuse and circularity play an important role. This is precisely where the natural stone aesthetic, practical performance characteristics, and a more conscious choice of materials reinforce one another.

Two Aesthetic Trends for 2027

Within this broader trend, Dekker sees two distinct design directions for 2027: Quiet Balance and Sculpted Space. Quiet Balance revolves around soft shapes, natural colors, well-being, and an organic approach to the kitchen. Sculpted Space, on the other hand, is more architectural, featuring geometry, layering, contrast, and bold material combinations.

What both approaches have in common is the prominent role of materials in the design. Not only how a surface looks, but also what it is made of, how it functions in everyday use, and what impact the choice of materials has.

Material as an integral part of the design

This opens up new possibilities for architects. Sustainability does not have to conflict with aesthetics, functionality, or budget. The truly interesting design challenge arises precisely when these aspects come together. The kitchen of 2027 is therefore less about the latest color or shape and more about a more fundamental question: Which material gives a design the desired look and feel while also being a conscious choice for the long term?

Dekker Zevenhuizen invites architects and designers to explore the possibilities of sustainable materials for kitchen countertops.
