World Toilet Day, November 19

November 19 is World Toilet Day. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on an everyday part of our home that we normally hardly ever think about: the toilet. Although the toilet is now the most ordinary thing in the world to us, it has a history stretching back thousands of years. And that evolution isn’t standing still. Following the flush toilet and the modern toilet, the shower toilet is also becoming an increasingly common fixture in the bathroom.

From thousands of years old to a modern toilet

The history of the toilet dates back thousands of years. As early as 4,500 years ago, there were civilizations that used toilets with drainage systems. The first precursor to the flush toilet appeared much later: in 1596, the Englishman Sir John Harington designed an early flush toilet. In the centuries that followed, the system was further improved, and starting in the 19th century, the toilet gradually evolved into the one we know today.

A brief timeline:

  • Over 4,500 years ago – early toilets with drainage systems
  • 430 years ago – the development of an early flush toilet
  • 150–200 years ago – the rise of the modern toilet
  • 2010 – Duravit introduces its first SensoWash® shower toilet

The next step: cleaning with water

While the basic principle of the toilet has remained virtually the same for a long time, the bidet toilet introduces a different approach to personal hygiene. Instead of relying solely on toilet paper, water is used for cleansing after using the toilet.

Duravit has been developing shower toilets since 2010. With SensoWash®, the toilet was enhanced with features that support personal hygiene and daily comfort. Today, features such as water jet strength and water temperature can be customized individually. Personal user profiles allow users to save their preferences, while automatic cleaning functions for the shower arm help maintain hygiene.

More Than Just Extra Comfort

The shower toilet can also play a role in independent living. Due to demographic changes and the growing focus on living independently at home for longer, solutions that make daily personal care easier are becoming increasingly relevant.

Cleaning with water can make personal hygiene easier after using the toilet. This can be helpful, for example, when moving or reaching becomes more difficult. Thus, the development of the toilet is not only about new features, but also about personal hygiene, comfort, and independence in daily life.

After thousands of years of toilet history, one thing is clear: even something as commonplace as the toilet continues to evolve.
