Durable carpet tiles double crowned

Story of fully recyclable carpet tiles continued

Shaw Contract's carpet tiles have become staples of the Dutch market. "We can certainly differentiate ourselves through excellent value for money, acoustics and durability," says Business Development Director Andrew Jackson. "This was already the case, but our New Path and Floor Architecture III collections are more durable than ever."

The new carpet tile collections use the fully recyclable EcoWorx S™ backing, which helps make them suitable for Closed Loop Recycling. Here, carpet tiles are processed into raw materials to produce more carpet tiles. "Back in the 1990s we introduced the first EcoWorx carpet tile, which is fully recyclable," Andrew explains. "This was a huge innovation in that market, as it was the first carpet product in the world with the Cradle to Cradle® Silver certification. The principle of this carpet tile is the basis for all kinds of new products tailored to the different markets in which we operate. In our carbon-neutral factory in Scotland, we continued the EcoWorx story by developing the EcoWorx S™ backing. In this, the S stands for Scotland. The EcoWorx S™ backing is made from a thermoplastic polyolefin compound, contains no bitumen, is 50% lighter than other backings and is Cradle to Cradle Silver certified."

Creative freedom with New Path

At Architect@Work, Shaw showed the New Path collection, the first collection to use this EcoWorx S™ backing. "For the carpet tiles themselves, we use EcoSolutionQ100, a mass dyed nylon made from 100% recycled nylon fibers. Combined with the backing, this creates a collection with the lowest carbon footprint of any Shaw Contract carpet tile collection to date. After use, we take the carpet tiles back, to be incorporated back into the production of new products. Closed Loop recycling, in other words."

The new collection is available as 50×50 cm carpet tile in the three styles, Upbeat, Positive and Poised. This gives designers a choice of adaptive shapes, wavy lines and organic forms. The three styles, available in 12 colors, can be used with each other
be combined.

"The New Path collection is Cradle to Cradle® Silver certified. This is the highest attainable for a finished product," Andrew says proudly. "Our efforts allow us to offer the architect much more choice than our competitors."

Shaw's hard work was also rewarded with another certification this year. Namely, Shaw Industries Group received a Works with Well label for its EcoWorx and and EcoWorx S™ carpet tile products. This means the products match the health strategies within the Well Building Standard, making it easier for specifiers and decision makers to select products that contribute to meeting certain Well certification requirements. "There are still very few products that are allowed to carry this label, so we are very happy about this," said Dr. K. K., president and CEO of the company.

During Architect@Work in Amsterdam, Shaw also introduced a second collection using EcoWorx S™ backing, Floor Architecture III. "These carpet tiles are available in the three styles Stone, Fragment and Formation, with three color groups; Saturated, Pastel and Subtle Accent and in three different backings. The EcoWorx S™ backing is one of the options. The collection is inspired by bringing together the shapes of natural stone, polished concrete, pebbles and small rocks, and the new colors create a fresh and sophisticated modern palette of 27 options: 18 new colors and nine neutrals. Anyone wishing to see the carpet tiles in real life is welcome to visit our Dutch showroom, in Oosterhout."
