An interior with its own unique character

Material as a Component of Identity

Generic interiors are increasingly giving way to a distinct, unique identity. Eljada Weltevreden, an account manager at DecoLegno, is currently seeing this trend clearly in the hospitality sector. Architects are looking for ways to give hotels, restaurants, and wellness environments a recognizable and distinctive character. At the same time, such a distinctive design must also hold up under intensive daily use.

“Interiors are increasingly taking on a character of their own, with surprising elements setting them apart,” says Weltevreden. Among other things, she sees a lot of organic shapes, curves, and unique angles. At the same time, a distinctive design must also be functional.

According to Weltevreden, solid surface is still far from always being considered a fully-fledged design material. The association with white, primarily functional applications still plays a role in this. “Durasein, on the other hand, demonstrates just how much scope the material offers for giving an interior its own distinctive character. The collection includes a wide range of designs, from natural stone, marble, and travertine looks to solid colors and bold, imaginative patterns.”

Design freedom in form and appearance

The architect can then carry that variation in aesthetic throughout different elements of the interior. “You can start on the exterior and then use the same material indoors in a curved counter, a back wall, or a vanity. That way, you tell a single story throughout the entire project.”

The material also offers a great deal of freedom in terms of shape. Durasein can be thermally formed, and sheets can be seamlessly bonded together. This makes it possible to create, among other things, rounded corners, organic shapes, and large elements as a single unit. XL sheets further expand these possibilities, for example, for long counters or kitchen islands.

Patternine offers even greater design freedom. Thanks to a 3D texture in the surface of Durasein®, an architect can not only choose from existing patterns but also develop their own design. “I tell them: think outside the box. For example, you could incorporate a logo, but really, you can create any design you want.” This way, the surface texture can also become part of an interior’s identity.

With Translucent, architects can also play with light. The semi-transparent panels allow light to pass through and can be used, for example, in reception desks, walls, and wellness areas. “Many architects don’t want to make it too flashy, but they do want to make a statement. That can be achieved through a unique detail.”

Staying in Good Condition

It is precisely in hotels that the combination of aesthetics, hygiene, and maintenance really comes to the fore. Durasein, for example, can be used in bathrooms and vanity units, where its seamless installation offers a practical advantage. Because dirt and moisture cannot seep into seams or cracks, the surfaces are easy to keep clean and maintain.

Even in the event of damage, a complete replacement isn't always necessary. Durasein® can be repaired locally by thermoforming it again. This helps the material retain its appearance longer and delays the need for replacement.

From centerpiece to outdoor table

The versatility of the material is also evident in the projects DecoLegno is working on. For example, an octagonal centerpiece was created using Weathered Wood for a business lounge designed by Appie Vos. In the Aroma Club Coffee Experience showroom in Antwerp, Durasein® Niagar was used in the large, rounded counter surrounding the centrally placed tree. The flowing shape and seamless finish clearly demonstrate the design freedom offered by solid surface materials.

For Weltevreden, the strength ultimately lies in its broad versatility. “You can incorporate the material throughout an entire project and use it in different ways each time. That’s how you tell a single story throughout the entire building.”
