To allow monuments and distinctive buildings to shine in the evening hours as well, the Municipality of Gorinchem set up a new lighting plan. The lighting had to be more attractive and energy efficient; of course with an eye for history. For the Grote Kerk and Tower, Bureau Lichtontwerpers (lighting design) and Livingprojects (technical realization) went to work. The new lighting was officially switched on for the first time on May 3 by Alderman Fatih Polatli of the Municipality of Gorinchem.
Previously, the lighting created an almost flat appearance as one bin of light shone on the façade of the Great Church. This had to and could be done differently. The new lighting design therefore consists of multiple layers in which all architectural components receive attention; the street, church and tower. Soft white light was chosen for the basic illumination of the Great Church and Tower. This accentuates the special details even more, creates depth in the image and really makes the building come to life. To provide 100% goosebumps, the Tower can be lit in any color. This gives the monument a beautifully unique character during a holiday, for example.
Alderman Fatih Polatli of the Municipality of Gorinchem: "The lighting of this important historical monument is now adapted to the insights of our time. The Great Church and Tower look beautiful in the dark! Thanks to the new lighting, the church is now one with the tower." Stephan Jacobs, project manager at Livingprojects: "From our passion and expertise and of course the wishes of the Municipality of Gorinchem, we sharpened the lighting design where necessary. In coordination with the heritage committee, we translated this design into a user-friendly, smart and high-profile whole." Hugo Hendrickx of Bureau Lichtontwerpers adds: "With our lighting design, we show the Grote Kerk and Tower in the evening with depth, layering and detail. We tell a story with the light, adding a new chapter to its long history."
To provide more energy-efficient and sustainable lighting, LED lighting was chosen. With the added advantage that more light is illuminated and less light is lost to the surroundings. Through the smart lighting control, Livingprojects can monitor and adjust the system remotely and the Municipality of Gorinchem itself can set different lighting scenes remotely. For example, it can give attention to specific details by dimming or brightening groups of lights.
